Short story
Eins gallery, 15.3 - 30.4.2025
:
and then, as we left behind the spot with the poplars and the dried up river?, he said that talking about the transformation of an object could resemble a permanently dried-up waterfall, an eternal absence, and that if I still needed another version of his thought, he would tell me that every object, whatever form it takes, will always resemble a lethargy of rocks, and when I asked him to explain this rigidity, he told me to close my eyes for a moment, to cross a gate in my mind, any gate, he whispered, and then to briefly consider any version of any characteristic of ours that I think could be fluid and unstable, like, for example, he continued, our provincial alcoholism, the kind that feeds off a tendency towards excess, when the alcohol seeps inside us and the surface of logic ceases to be impermeable, and I might have obeyed for a moment, and yes, I closed my eyes, even though I wanted to ask if logic could truly have a surface, or, if he
couldn!t answer that, how he could define the lethargy of rocks, and those thoughts were suddenly interrupted because he kept asking me: hey, don!t you get it, even if a system suffers
from chronic dysfunction, it never stops being what it was originally called: a system, and food, by the way, he added, what else could it be but an undefined exchange, a melodic line between need and gratitude, a great balancer, and now I opened my eyes and walked faster, because all that he was telling me might have come from a kind of childishness, some nonsense, because, I was about to say, even when a worm chews a bit of a beech tree, you can clearly see it, the tree
is now scratched, and certainly, I wouldn’t stretch it as far as to say that with the worm!s intervention, what remains before us isn’t a beech but a half-form, but hey, I!d say, even the
cloudy remnants of oil can sometimes become sawdust, and, yes, I!d continue, maybe to truly
live, we need to keep engraved in our memory the harshness of the care we gave to something or someone, along with the sense of surrendering all we have without second thought, as if nothing else exists but this mutual rattling, but in the end, we both agreed that all of this is nothing but transformations and distorted images of the world, which had long begun to fade, often completely, like glaucoma gradually dulls vision, and this realization, which struck us as we were walking along the path, together with gusts of wind, reminded us that, yes, let!s admit it— even sheet metal can sigh

Evagoria Dapola (arts writer &#38;amp; theorist)

Phanos Kyriacou’s intimately suspended objects

A disproportional framed poster under a big name-sign, announcing that some sculptures and a couple of drawings at his father's garage, locates us to the exhibition. Hidden between cars and repair shops, the experience of the exhibition begins even before witnessing Phanos Kyriacou’s new works. Subverting the character and attributes of an exhibition space, the exhibition set at a car repair shop, a space without clear conceptual significance but with subversive significance, it opens possibilities for audience to experience art in a more democratic manner, allowing variating contexts for the art of exhibiting. Beyond the simplicity of its availability, it has its own effect on the situations that happen in the exhibition. The performative set up, characteristic of his work, activates everything around it, rendering visual everything that exists in the cosmos of the car garage.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;

An extension of time as labour, the way the exhibition is handled, being set up and set down four individual times and open for six-hour intervals, to make up a full day; and the way the exhibition functions within a fully functional, physical labour-centred space, oscillate between moments of noise and freneticism, deep calm and peace. As one steps into the space, realises the various textured and carefully assembled takes on memories constructed and confabulated from the fragments of narrative and materiality. The audience has to seek the works in the space, only guided by a holistic exhibition map strategically placed in the middle of the exhibition space, where one reaches after experiencing half of the works in the exhibition, either consciously or subconsciously recognising and placing them within the busy topography of the garage. In a manner typical of Kyriacou’s frequently intimate, confessional, nature of sculpture-making, organic arrangements, tender gestures of deep-time, traces of present and past histories, do not disappear in the busy environment, but rather create a contemplational experience.

His works, ideas, propositions are not imposing, not asking us to find or locate them, but they find us and meet us on their own merit. The faint sounds of the radio are the link that connects the film, the text and what happens in the space. Delimiting the space as it resounds only within the tiny office, working as a suggestion rather than a proposition, it becomes clearly personal and somewhat cinematographic, turning the space itself into a stage. A stretched car-seat hangs on the wall, yet it does not resemble itself that much any more, but rather as an open structure, between an image and on object, suspended in time, overdetermined with connections and possibilities that do not distort it. His floor sculptures give shape and weight to the most invisible processes, prosing a persistent question of the hierarchies that exist from object to object, between his sculptural gestural tradition and experimentation, direction and discovery.&#38;nbsp; Finding an intricate balance between accuracy and expression, one of his marker drawings, placed tenderly next to an old, faded interview of the artist himself, framed by his father, on the wall of his repair shop. In direct connection to the gentle gesture of care and pride of one’s own, it is assigned an tiny wall space, between tools and ephemera. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;

The exhibition seems to be conceived by the artist like a repair itself, a whisper intrinsic to the architecture and arrangement of the space, as his art moves spheres of imagination, reforming the repair shop itself. The works seem to understand and relate to the environment, beginning with a low plane of vision as the placement of the first encountered works creates a sense of grounding, followed by gestures that are not documents but rather filled with a sense of play and wonder in the space.&#38;nbsp; The installation of the sculpture on the shelf-unit and on the work station, from a distance appear to be just another set of tools on a shelf, but they are rather “breathers” creating glow in dark spaces. Duplicating the forms around them, objects that suck air, those works achieve a remarkable shift, breathing in a sense of rhythm and reinforcing the aura of intimacy around his practice. Subconsciously leading us as the audience to examine the familiar and its institutions that uphold the Cypriot and Mediterranean at large society by reverse-engineering the garage’s physical vestiges, as the work ‘liquid’ does, exposing the seams of the repair and the relational spaces it creates.

The artist's clear line of work, a deep time thought-process, reveals that brevity and subtlety are potent artistic agents in their own right. Kyriacou organically creates an environment for developing conditions, bringing forefront things that could be reappreciated, like preexisting rubber tires, found pieces of wood and leather. As the accompanying text mentions for the video, the exhibition is emphasizing pauses, oral histories and disrupts the expectation of seamless productivity or linear storytelling. What it mostly accomplishes, is to highlight his ability to metamorphosise through tender, refined, crudely sculpted and material gestures commonplace industrial and natural materials into quasi-organic arrangements through intensive processes of assembling, bending, sculpting and casting. His monumental sculptural prosthetic system feels like an extended dialogue in the form of whispers, enabling audience to experience time differently, creating temporal connections that allude to memories of longing and belonging and therefore, repairing reality. Immersing ourselves in his poetic manifestations, we see a glimpse of the different phases of a near-obsessive search of identity of the material, where fictions and facts, histories and speculations, are formally measured and composed, yet naturally exposing their intrinsic physicality and materiality.

To walk into Kyriacou's exhibition is to emerge oneself in an emotional experience, equal in pathos to human connection and everyday indulgence and mediated in intensity by material structures. The exhibition feels like a short story with a great pacing and sentimentally rich. His sculptural interventions are filled with the porosity and intimacy signature to Kyriacou's work and his drawings seem to have been executed with his quick concision, creating a delicate dynamic where brief flares of gestures, have the power to impart lasting meaning. His self-curated exhibition functions like a performative installation, infused with a kind of warmness that comes only natural, when one is truly familiar with things. The thoughtful treatment of the space, filled with a sense of responsibility he imposes to himself, to treat the material in certain ways in order for everything to be infused with love, care and tenderness, is part of the holisticness of the project and not the protagonist. The familiar dynamics, that are not merely anthropomorphic or even anthropo-centric, come about as feelings of appreciation, calling the audience to be open to an exchange that expands into something else, that becomes part of us, even though it is a fragment that builds over time. It reminds us that we are related to it, even from a distance.

A note on ΠΑΤΕΡΑΠΑΤΕΡΑ

by Evagoras Vanezis (curator, writer)&#38;nbsp;

In 2011, the film ΠΑΤΕΡΑΠΑΤΕΡΑ was shot in Mr. Pavlos Kyriacou’s garage. It is structured with three main components: the recording of humorous stories told by Mr. Pavlos, glimpses into the bond with his hunting dog, Rocky, and cinematic renditions of everyday moments in and around the garage. Neither strictly a documentary nor a fiction film, it is rather an exercise in observation, unfolding manifold ways of relating to this space. Through a fragmented narrative, it captures situations and objects while weaving in interspersed shots of animated drawings.

In the opening minutes, we see the protagonist in the small office conversing with someone off-camera, likely seated across from him—his unwavering gaze in a straight line suggests as much. He tells an anecdote about the fabled “Yiorkos tis Kakas”, that concludes with a burst of laughter. As the film progresses, he recounts more stories featuring urban legends that encapsulate the spirit of a society in constant flux. Regarding the laughter that arises when such stories are shared, particularly in workspaces, such as the garage, Harvard Medical School professor Carl Marci notes: “Laughter is a social signal between people. It’s like punctuation. Sometimes, in the middle of a stressful day, it’s helpful to be the exclamation point.”

The camera lingers on details: work shoes, reading glasses, eyes narrowing as the glasses are removed, a closed notebook. These “unproductive” moments set the dynamic rhythm of the film—pauses, laughter, blurred vision. A phone call reveals that Rocky, the second protagonist, suffers from a toothache. Treating it becomes a choreography of relief; his friend, Mr. Pavlos, rubs his gums, and the dog briefly relaxes. The discovery of the scientific word for ticks, κρότωνες (krotones), read out from a collar’s box, causes surprise with its resonant sound. It is complemented by a flashing image, a pencil drawing of a tick. The storytelling is further accentuated by a continuous alternation of images featuring marker-drawn shapes dancing, shifting, and gradually transforming into tools, structures, and objects. These evolving forms reinforce the passage of time and the film’s fluid relationship between observation and imagination: like whispers into how things can become otherwise.

The narrative fragmentation and cinematic composition evoke a utopian trace—an invitation to reconsider how we relate to time, memory, and the spaces that shape us whilst we shape them. They create a necessary rupture in the rigid state of the present, which is often structured to legitimize and reinforce dominant cultural narratives. By emphasizing pauses, oral histories, and seemingly mundane gestures, the film disrupts the expectation of seamless productivity and linear storytelling. It highlights the importance of attentiveness—of seeing and listening differently—challenging the ways we inhabit and perceive space, making room for ambiguity, humor, and reflection.

Key ChangeCurated by Evagoras Vanezis
Minerva Hotel, Platres &#38;nbsp;/ 6 August - 10 September 2023

The Minerva Hotel in Pano Platres, lying dormant for some time now, hosts the project “Key Change”, where three contemporary artists, Phanos Kyriakou, Peter Eramian and Maria Spivak, suggest a series of sculptural gestures-installations that activate the space and the senses. Audiences are invited to approach these installations as elements of a dramaturgy where a suspended sense of time takes over. The protagonists of the story are unknown, but the imprints of their actions are everywhere to be seen. This exhibition is presented in the framework of Safely Held, a series of exhibitions and events produced by Pylon Art &#38;amp; Culture, in collaboration with invited curators from May - December 2023.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;
work words:
.This neon work comments on the often-difficult relationship between people and their locality. The perception of locality is underscored by feelings of intimacy and the demands of love, which make for complex mechanisms of relating to place. A take on Joseph Beuys' declaration "I Like America and America Likes Me" from 1974, Kyriacou here communicates a self-conscious expectation for a reciprocal relation and uses his own handwriting to highlight the social dimensions of being.&#38;nbsp;Public Note (2012)

.This exaggerated lamp was created from memory by the artist along with a metal craftsman. It is evocative of a moment when during a long walk, the surrounding area took on a cinematic texture. Beyond its utilitarian value, the lamp appeared almost like a (misplaced) prop. This mnemonic reconstruction signifies a similar object that is somewhere in Berlin. By chance, it is also similar in design to the lamps on the outside of Minerva Hotel. How much of the memory relies on reality and how much on fantasy is hard to
decipher.&#38;nbsp;Illuminated Scene (2013)

.The drawings are an expression of sculptural ideas on paper, whilst playing upon the convention of a still life. Kyriakou is pursuing two different yet interrelated ideas. One concerns the challenge of formal abstraction and the other balance in composition. For the artist, it is almost impossible to move away from representation, especially in sculpture, as each form is invariably found in nature. The tinted glass subtly obscures the viewing of the drawn forms, creating a colour field that draws our attention to the interplay between material, light and sight. Fig(ure) I - II - III (2023)

.The work concerns the joining together of two found materials: pine wood, taken from a support structure in construction, and door handles, which remind of domestic environments. The handles are polished and show signs of having been struck. This is due to being tested out to access whether the material is real bronze or plated aluminum. Any handle is a performative object: it awaits the activation of a hand that will turn it, whilst hinting at the existence of other spaces. This performativity is intensified here by their positioning and reflections, which distort viewing by enveloping the viewer in them.&#38;nbsp;Door Handles (2020)

.This neat and symmetrical piece of wood was found on the side of a road construction. The stainless steel additions support it and create a new sculptural space out of it. The smell of pine wood is complicated by the addition of cypress oil on its surface. The viewer is called upon to come close to the sculpture, ‘invading’ the space and using smell to connect with the sculpture. As the different smells intermingle, the memories, places, and landscapes that spring to mind interpolate in the present. Cypress Pine (2016)

.The work concerns an artistic exploration of how materials stand witness to life and to the force of bodies that come into contact with them. Two used bar stool seats, with substantial wear and tear on their surface, are treated with layers of lacquer and placed on the wall. Their original use is voided, and the materials take a life of their own, entering into a dialogue with the history of the object. The resulting surfaces remind of landscapes with powerful movement.&#38;nbsp;Bar Stools (2019)

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;

As part of the rehearsal residency programme, Phanos Kyriacou presents the installation People also ask […]. With People also ask […] the artist transforms the facade of the space, departing from a series of found questions in connection to the notion of rehearsal. With this installation, consisting of a lightbox, a letterbox and an aluminium branch, Kyriacou proposes a configuration of affection where design and crafting are reimagined. The installation parts also embark on memory as a tool for their formation to evoke behaviours and feelings which are mediated through personal or collective encounters at rehearsal space. The façade installation will be on view at rehearsal for 365 days. Besides, a temporary indoor environment is suggested via found, borrowed, and made objects staging an installation anew around the work Directing Mum. In the video, the artist’s mother,&#38;nbsp; rehearses her signature cheesecake recipe for an audio recording that took place in December of 2019.

few words
i am an islander, just like the room I chose to design in Kastellorizo -the closest island to my island

the sun in my part of the world is ruthless, the soil dry, and&#38;nbsp;the scrublands an extension of the sea: an earthy palette was unavoidable

my mother recalls still sleeping in a tubular iron high bed, even after her engagement in the mid-seventies

my aunts live next to each other and share the same rectangular display cabinet, made by two different carpenters&#38;nbsp;

memories and stories of objects I grew up with furnish the room&#38;nbsp;

vernacular furniture designs are reinterpreted and infused with sculptural elements

sometimes, materials become the objects themselves

in the countryside, the round polished fiberglass porch tables reflect the moon;

I'm working around that too &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;

		<description>Through the use of the sculptural and the filmic, Phanos Kyriacou’s practice involves the setting up of encounters that restructure commonsensical ideations of the relations between objects, information and society. Embracing paradox, the histories of the ad-hoc and the exceptions on which the exemplary rests, he often collaborates with local Cypriot craftsmen in order to elaborate a materialism of alternatives. His interest lies in utilising both the urban and the exhibition space as sites of antagonistic flows, where rapturous rearrangements of signs create surfaces of urgency. Using the fragment as a tactical ally, his sculptures often host found and made objects. Kyriacou exhaustingly carries over the (ar)rhythmic congeniality of fragments into taxonomies that energise a semiotics of (g)hosting, visually translating moments that elicit the potentiality of inbetweenness. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;Born in Nicosia&#38;nbsp;Lives&#38;nbsp; and works in Nicosia &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
